The Distraction of Freedom

Stacks Image 714
“Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose…”

How free do we really want to be?

Freedom. Seems to be mentioned in just about every other blog or Facebook post. Maybe freedom is the new 6-figures. Maybe freedom is the new black.

The way I see it, only a few of us would be doing things very differently if we realised our freedom. Despite the stories we tell ourselves, we’re all pretty much doing what we want to do, in any given moment. Not because we don’t realise how free we already are, but because freedom isn’t really what we want.

Freedom is just another ‘in order to.’

We want freedom in order to do something differently. And believe what we’d do differently would help us be happy.

I call bullshit!

Freedom is just another conceptualised container for happiness and joy. The difference between it and many other quests, such as 6-figures or the perfect partner, is that you already have freedom, in so much as you are always choosing what to do and how to respond, and when to feel happy.

Only those that have realised this feel free.

The rest of us are like fish in a river looking for water.

I say screw the quest for freedom! It’s a distraction from what every single one of us really wants: Joy.
Can there be a greater reason for doing something other than joy? Is there a more worthwhile cause than the expansion of love and happiness?

Joy is at the end of the ‘in-order-to’ line. Joy, happiness, love, ARE the point of everything.

Please let joy be the new black. It’s a much more obvious attribute of the human experience than freedom, and it’s as contagious as head-lice at a wig-sharing party.

Let’s get straight to the point and drop all the ‘in order to’ BS.

Let’s drop the distractions and get straight to joy.
