Being You
Whilst often well intended, this kind of advice just has us strive to meet yet another definition of ourselves.
When we define we confine.
The moment someone tells you how to be, they’re really telling you how not to be your true self, because any time you try to be somebody you are distracted away from who you truly are; the you that simply shows up when you’re not trying to be someone.
Alas, it is a curse of the self-help profession that seems to proliferate this type of unintentional self-obsession. It’s really coaching the ego rather than helping you to allow your true self to appear.
Even when you are trying to be yourself you can only ever try to conform with the image you have of yourself, which is entirely fabricated from years of conditioning and beliefs.
It is only when you stop trying to be somebody, stop trying to be anybody, stop trying to even be yourself, that you are truly free. Without any conformity.
The easiest way to allow this is to go do what you love in the world. Contrary to much in the self-help profession, this outward focus of giving your love to what you do will actually allow your inner self to appear, no self-obsession required. Your love for what you do will show the world you.
What’s it like to be you when you’re not trying to be someone?
